What about property taxes?

If my house is on fire, I want the fire department to come. Property taxes pay for services we need. More rooftops = more property taxes. I support increasing housing density and access to affordable housing so that we can spread the tax burden across more property. In Wyandotte County, we need to unlock additional forms of revenue so that we aren't constantly relying on raising the mill levy to ensure our fire, police, and schools have the funds they need. Just like KCMO has an earnings tax, I would support an earnings tax in KCK. Our friends in Missouri are making more than $240 million per year for state and local government services because they legalized cannabis. There is no reason why we couldn't be doing the same. I also support the affordable property tax measures listed above, like expanding the senior property tax freeze.

What about immigration?

There are things the State of Kansas can do to help protect our community, even though immigration is a federal issue. I'm horrified by the very real fear in House District 31 right now, and it's our collective duty to ensure all of our neighbors - regardless of documentation status - are safe. I was proud to see Safe and Welcoming Wyandotte pass and equally disappointed when the State Legislature quickly invalidate parts of that ordinance. I approve of the state policy recommendations proposed by the National Immigration Law Center, including supporting policies that ban law enforcement officials from concealing their identity, prevent state and local law enforcement from becoming militarized, and laws that promote the documentation of abuse and create wider pathways for accountability.

What about trans rights?

Transgender rights are human rights. If you talk to people in House District 31, we are much more concerned about how we’re going to pay our bills than we are about pronouns. The government should stay focused on solving problems instead of oppressing people and creating divisive political noise. I oppose any efforts to limit freedom of gender expression. Gender affirming care is lifesaving care, and Kansans deserve access to all needed healthcare.
